Occupy Wall street: where the folks of color at?

numol:

@kemetically-ankhtified: i’m sorry if i’m whitesplaining/taking over the thread here — i’ll back off if you want.

WARNINGS: white supremacy/whitesplaining/tone argument.  also lots of cursing.  all this below the “read more” cut.

@ numol:

Not only have you missed the point entirely - at the same time - as was displayed by your verbiage & reaction-based outbursts/attacks - you illustrate exactly the reasons why humanity is doomed… or at least the limited, reactionary, ego-based mind set we are generally accustomed to. I never meant for you to get so upset. I though you could tell a literary device from fact? My mistake. Deep breaths… you’re gonna be just fine.

Why are we so hung up on differences that we can’t see that race/sex/pick any damn difference you can think of - in the end means very little - when every soul is in shackles - when every child can’t draw breath as the air is so polluted - when every person on this earth is turned into begging slaves, starving to death - when every last inch of this earth is broken beyond repair and every specie extinct. So then tell me - if we don’t put all our energy into stopping those forces now - will it matter? What does it take for someone who is so caught up in dualistic mind set - to look beyond such insignificant affairs? Not to say any -ism is insignificant - but in the way you might say a firework is insignificant when compared to an asteroid colliding with Earth. (That right there was a literary device - FYI - so rest assured that no asteroid is going to hit Earth - i was only trying to illustrate a point - in case you didn’t catch it) And the insults? You’ve done nothing but show how easily coaxed you are into believing exactly what you’re told. Sheep in a flock. Too scared to think for herself. Save your energy child. The fighting has just begun.

For more on the divide and rule/conquer  - see this link. Maybe pick up a book or two on political economy/war strategy… if you don’t like reading I could suggest a slew of documentaries that would get you on your feet… then if we’re lucky that might just generate some original though. And a suggestion? You’ll find in the real world - people wont take you seriously just caus you type in CAPS.

I wish I could believe your nonsensical gibberish - but I know what I stand for. And I know what I won’t stand for. I can tell you’re quite young, so I will ignore your rudeness. If you misunderstood my communication & drew conclusions that’s your prerogative. Perhaps with time (and maturity) you will come to recognize that what you see in others is only a reflection of yourself. What you (supposedly) see in me that you find so appalling - is in fact you. Instead of picking tumblr fights over stuff you make up in your own mind - instead try to foster peace. If you can’t foster peace - then direct that passion into something constructive - like occupy wall street???

I am not your enemy. We are one. Even if you’re kind of a brat ;)

For goodness sakes. Talk about a case of the what if’s. Here’s an original perspective. Sorry for being blunt but god damn - can you take a sec & plz fucking listen to yourselves? For once - can we try to stay united here? Can’t we get past our differences long enough so we can - together - overthrow a common enemy? «GREED» All the isms - racism, sexism, elitism - all serve to divide and conquer. Stop with the whining & petty excuses & do what you can to help. If you’re not feeding your family caus you’re on wall street - that’s no help. If you can’t protest caus you need to go to work & keep your family from starving - then don’t fucking protest. There’s no shame in that. Pretty straight forward really. Makes sense to me. Fucking forget the rest. If we keep squabbling nothing will ever change. FUCK! We’re all suffering from greed. People of all colour. People in general. Who fucking cares who did what. What matters is what you do right this fucking minute.

Questions to keep in mind:

  • Who organized the event?
  • Who does the struggle represent most?
  • How long have people of color suffered at worst conditions from corporate greed?
  • watch the videos: who’s mostly at the occupation?
  • If people of color were the majority at the occupation, would the occupation have lasted this long?
  • Is racial inequality a central component in the struggle?
  • Let’s say the occupation is successful, and a new system is put into place: who will the new system benefit most?
  • Police brutality: cops have been killing and incarcerating people of color at much higher rates than white people. Is the police brutality at occupywallstreet reflective of the true racist nature of police brutality in this country?
  • The South Bronx/16th congressional district is the poorest congressional district in the United States (where I live). How many people from the South Bronx are participating at this occupation? Even if they wanted to attend, could they risk the survival of their family by missing work and school?
  • How are the participants of occupy wall street privileged in their access to receiving and sending information concerning the event?

WHERE THE FOLKS OF COLOR AT IN ALL THIS???

i posted this in response to this article

“Our intention is not to dismiss it as just this, but the gut feeling was that there is a serious disconnect down there. We left with mad questions! Where was the hood? Where was the poorest congressional district in the USA, from The South Bronx at? Like we say in Hip Hop, where Brooklyn at? Could it be that perhaps the working class couldn’t afford to just leave work and the responsibility of bills and family survival to camp out in a city park? Did folks from our communities not know about this? If people of color were occupying Wall St. would we have lasted this long?”

@truthlovebeauty: are you one of those “pointing out racial/class issues makes you racist/classist and is ~divisive so we should just totally ignore them” people?  what kemetically-ankhtified says sure doesn’t seem like “petty squabbling” or “whining” to me — IMO these are really important questions.  [if i’ve totally misunderstood what you said/meant, i’m sorry.]

@numol: Glad to follow up on this. I don’t make a claim to categorize myself - but feel free by all means. Personally, I think what’s happening on Wall Street could perhaps turn out to be one of the most important events in modern history - this (fingers crossed) is a huge turning point for us (us meaning humanity). It means we’re waking up. I feel it in my bones - this is just the beginning - and im so excited I could pee. On that same token, I feel it’s petty to imply that the OWS movement is somehow racist - that Occupy wall street is by white people for white people? Hey check it out - Occupy Wall Street has extended an open invitation to protest whatever you want. Anyone could & should attend. I’d ask that please, out of respect, don’t undermine the efforts of the protesters by implying that they’re all white middle class men/women from privileged backgrounds. That’s so presumptuous it’s ridiculous.

I admit that I haven’t been a part of the protest - I’m in Canada working because I’m a broke ass - so I’m not protesting caus even though I really want to  be there - I can’t afford to travel. I certainly don’t feel bad that I can’t be there. I’m doing what I can with what I have. But by the way - I’m not using my situation as an excuse to guilt trip Americans into believing that somehow it’s their fault that I - a Canadian - can’t be there. I’m not sitting here wondering why Canada isn’t being represented on Wall street. I’m not insinuating that somehow American’s are deliberately shunning Canadians, because Occupy Wall Street was organized by American’s - for Americans; that the true purpose of OWS is to represent the struggle of oppressed Americans only (not Canadians) - and that all the poor Canadians that have suffered at the hands of American’s greed (how many of us have died in America’s wars - for one) are not receiving equal representation. Oh and by the way - after watching a bunch of videos on youtube - I have noticed that it’s only Americans in attendance - but I don’t then assume that that therefore means America must hate Canadians. Above all else - I’m certainly not using this whole elaborate scheme to excuse why I didn’t (or somehow couldn’t) show up to protest on Wall St.

To illustrate further - I’m a white woman - so in the hierarchy of things (which I am aware of but do not prescribe to) - I rank somewhere above a black woman but below a black man - seeing as my primary purpose in life is to birth children, & beyond that, I should just keep my mouth shut unless of course I’m sucking a hard c***. Amirite?  So now - RE: Occupy wall street - lets then say I’m a raging feminist and I (my ego) relates somehow to the experience of the chicks who were violently & unnecessarily mased by Mr Bologne - and I somehow figure that this must mean that all white women are targeted by the oppressive white (male dominated) NYPD. So in a fit of rage, I start a tumblr rant about how the NYPD is a sexist organization - because they’ve clearly been only masing white women (from the handful of videos I’ve watched - so for sure you know I have a good grasp of the events in their entirety).

Now I’d consider my perspective to be just a lil biased - don’t you? Perhaps, I’m looking for an excuse to play the sexism card - maybe maybe? And all so that I can perpetrate my stance of vistim-hood as a white woman? And now I have a good reason (excuse) why I can’t be there because I’m a walking target? True - I could write a whole page about it - but I’m not - because in actuality - whether you/me/we choose to see it or not - the greater issue at hand transcends sexism. It transcends race/gender/class/whathaveyou-ism. Because this is a fight for our humanity. And the last I checked - regardless of your race/sex/class/etc - we’re all human beings. First and foremost - we are human beings. So can we unify on that front? Caus until we do, the internal squabbling over race/gender/class will serve only to keep us distracted, divided & ineffective when trying to bring about a needed change  - for all of us - and by us - I mean all oppressed human beings - AKA the 99 percent. So what’s it gonna be? Are we gonna give it a rest & fight these fuckers - or - are we gonne keep whining about which minority is more oppressed than the other - when we know that at the end of the day - we’re all oppressed as long as this greedy sham of a system, which is hell bent on destroying humanity, mother earth and all her children - is allowed to continue?  That’s my perspective. Take what you will.

Okay, on my visit to Occupy Wall Street.

I don’t want to say too much, I feel like I’d be giving away too god knows who. At this point I hate the police too much to even think this kind of info they might use against them.

But I will say, they are organized. Not that they’re plotting anything other than how to remain in the occupation, because they aren’t plotting anything at all. But the way they communicate when they have meetings, their method I mean, is incredible, as well as how they take care of each other. They continue to find new ways to become more and more efficient.

They are also incredibly peaceful. Of course the people staying there, camping out, or passing through are just as enraged about this country as any of us, but their efforts are incredibly peaceful, they even spoke about people trying to get them pushed out of the area and how they only responded to those sort of things with positivity. To see their determination and efficiency and peacefulness (even with my By Any Means Necessary attitude) pretty much made me want to cry.

They have welcome stations at the front and the back of Liberty Plaza, where they are now. A makeshift band of drums and things like the railing on some steps and drumsticks played on one end while one womyn danced. People stopped to listen, sometimes entered, passed through the occupation, read the hand-painted signs lining the ground, talked to folks for more information. Some just stopped to enjoy the music.

I spoke to the girl banging on the railing with the pink hair, as you’ll see in some of my photos later. She had come from Massachusetts to help out, and her and her friend (girlfriend?) gave me vegan cupcakes (NOM) as we waiting for the meeting, which informed me on a lot. They told me taking photos helps get the word out, so I took some, with the subjects’ permissions.

Also, Michael Moore, Cornel West, and Immortal Technique passed by within the past few days for support, just wanted to throw that in there.

Like I said, I really don’t want to say too much. But I figured there are probably a lot of people who would like to help but live nowhere near or just can’t make it.

You have probably already thought of this if that is the case but just in case, they now have an official shipping address (oh yeah, I watched them open some donated shipment too!), so if you want to, they’re pretty much taking anything. Food, even things like shelves, electronics, anything really.

DONATE!
UPS Store 118A
Fulton st #205
New York, NY, 10038
Non perishable, no checks (money orders okay), any size package okay

Also, there is a page on their website where you can choose to send money, or even order food for them HERE. A local pizza place is taking orders online be delivered to them, which is dope. Veg* pizzas preferred. They mentioned that the local businesses and restaurants who support them catch a lot of flack, so I’m proud of those businesses for being supportive.

Okay I’m gonna make some food now and then I’ll post some photos.

Ahh this really makes me wanna go!

“Hey you jammers, dreamers, patriots and revolutionaries out there.
Our occupation of Wall Street is less than two weeks away … do we have it together?
The perpetrators of the massive financial fraud have been allowed to slip quietly from the scene and continue business as usual. Our elected representatives in Washington have become so tightly intertwined with the financiers and bankers that public accountability has all but vanished.
#OCCUPYWALLSTREET is all about breaking up that cosy relationship between money and politics and bringing the perpetrators of the financial crash of 2008 to justice.
On September 17, 20,000 of us will descend on Wall Street, the iconic financial center of America, set up a peaceful encampment, hold a people’s assembly to decide what our one demand will be, and carry out an agenda of full-spectrum, absolutely nonviolent civil disobedience the likes of which the country has not seen since the freedom marches of the 1960s.
From our encampment we will launch daily smart mob forays all over lower Manhattan … peaceful, creative happenings in front of Goldman Sachs; the SEC; the Federal Reserve; the New York Stock Exchange … and maybe even, if we can figure out where they’re being held, at the sites of Obama’s private $38,500 per person fundraising events happening somewhere in Manhattan on Sept. 19 and 20.
Our strategy will be that of the master strategist Sun Tzu: “appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected.”
With a bit of luck, and if fate is on our side, we may be able to turn all of lower Manhattan into a site of passionate democratic contestation – an American Tahrir Square.
We will do all this with peace in our hearts. Our unshakable commitment to nonviolence will give us the spiritual strength we need to inspire the nation and to ultimately triumph in the weeks and maybe months of struggle that will unfold after September 17.
